This Poem

There was once a boy
with darker skin
Circles round his eyes
much like his kin

Hair is all messed up
Handwriting's a blur
And a bit paranoid
when something will stir

He may look okay
He may look fine
But all the ruckus of the world
Is happening in his mind

He is confused of who he is
Unaware of his purpose
Feeling so insecure
His mind in a tempest

He feels as if he has
a lot of love to share
But when the giving starts
rejections fly though the air

This has been his life
for almost a decade
He has gotten used to it so much
he is up for an accolade

No one seems to be hurting
No one seems to be in pain
For if they knew what it was
They'd understand the strain

Person after person
who comes in his life
Always leaves not soon after
Leaving sadness and strife

All he that is with him
aside from the depression
Are the scars on his arm
and the seemingly silent oppression

Now alone in the house
with no one wanting to talk to him
Sits this sad little boy
pouring his heart on this poem

  1. This boy should step out of himself and reach out without wanting something in return. That way, rejection won't hurt him. Also that way, this boy will learn that rejection is another way of saying, "Next!" =)

  2. The boy might be tired. Successive heartbreaks can do that to a boy.

  3. The boy should also give all his love to himself, without hurting others, for a time. He will grow, he will learn, he will be a better man. He will be whole alone, so that when someone comes, that special other, he can give himself, a whole, to another whole, and together, they'll become one. What then could the boy give, despite all the love he feels he has, if deep down he is not whole, still a void, to a special other who is whole? A void and a whole are anathemas of the other, they cannot be one.

    Love yourself, dodong. :)

  4. The boy might have done such a thing in the past. And seeing where and how he is at this moment, he is rethinking what he might have done and is confused.

  5. I was that boy for a long, long time. And in many ways, I still am that boy.

Yes, it can get tiring and confusing. I have done the "love yourself first" route and the "love others without expecting something in return" route too. And what I've realized is that one can only find some form of balance when one embraces both. And when there's a sense of balance, then one is blessed with a glimpse of peace and tranquility.

What really helps me a lot is the piece called "Desiderata." Check it out: http://www.fleurdelis.com/desiderata.htm
